Varied Skies

Well, this is it; our last blog from the road. Barring any unforeseen difficulties, we will pull into our driveway in a few hours and begin a new normal.

While practically bolting home after leaving Lake Fort Smith State Park, we have managed to squeeze in a few sights. We first settled on the banks of the Mississippi River at Tom Sawyer RV Park in West Memphis.

We have stayed here before and once again we enjoyed watching the barges traverse the river.

We had planned to go to downtown Memphis and eat at one of our favorite BBQ joints (Central BBQ), but they closed on July 5 for an employee party. We regrouped and decided to give Marlowe’s a shot. Just down the street from Graceland, Marlowe’s is known for its BBQ and its fleet of pink Cadillacs that chauffeur folks to the restaurant from local hotels. Nasty carpeting and filthy tables and walls overshadowed the large portions of decent food and an interesting collection of Elvis memorabilia.

Though a bit underwhelmed by Marlowe’s, we perked up when seeing Graceland. We did a drive-by (photo)shooting of the mansion and Elvis’s airplane, the “Lisa Marie.”

The next day we motored just past Elvis’s birthplace in Tupelo, MS, on our way to Anniston, AL. Anniston offered a convenient place to stop that would leave us with a reasonable final leg home, but provided so much more. After setting up camp, we made the quick drive to downtown and dined at Effina’s where we indulged in some tasty Italian food.

During dinner, M mentioned that a reviewer had found the restaurant while looking for the world’s largest chair. Intrigued, we looked it up and found history just a few blocks away.

No longer the world’s largest chair, I understand it still holds the distinction of being the world’s largest office chair. What a way to wrap up this grand adventure!
