Welcome to Sugarloaf Key, situated in the lower Florida Keys at Latitude 24.6246° N, the furthest south we will venture in the motorhome on this grand tour.
We island hopped down US1, crossed the 7-mile bridge, and rolled into the Sugarloaf KOA under the watchful eye of native sentries patrolling the trees and guarding the RV sites like Egyptian Sphinx.
A change in latitude does indeed cause a change in attitude. Our spirits nearly topped the incredibly high dew point that turned each of us into a human condensation rod. But we managed to carve a path through the dense, moisture-filled, air and grab some good grub at places like Mangrove Mama’s, Hogfish Bar, and Fogarty’s.
Touring Key West bested even our extra-strength antiperspirants and deodorant. Good thing we are all family.
The party town of Key West is not always family friendly. Fortunately, the town installed kid-sitting stations in key locations. The stations work much like a parking meter. Just park your kid in the restraint system and feed the meter to keep the oxygen flowing.
The clear local waters provide the best way to escape the heat and humidity. Snorkeling among the colorful fish in the blue waters of Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary is a great option.
The local sharks do not seem to mind the intrusion.
Nor did the giant Grouper who liked to hang out under the boat.
Or you can stay inside, appreciate the AC, celebrate Easter, and find some eggs.
But you have to brave the elements to catch snapper!
We all flipped out over the Keys.
Pictures are great!
Thank you again for sharing your journey!!! Love the pics! :0) Ah! I remember Sugarloaf KOA! Fun! BTW, could you bring back one of those restraint systems in teen size???
As always, great pics! We are in Miami until Friday. Call us if you’re passing through here!!
